Mexicano (Agave rhodacantha) belongs to Sola de Vega and a thin band of palenques south of Miahuatlán. Twelve to eighteen years to maturity, sharper than karwinskii agaves, leaner than arroqueño. The signature is herbal-bitter – long, slightly astringent, a finish drinkers either fall for or never warm to. Solo bottlings ask $50-$80 done seriously; in three-plant ensambles, mexicano's bitter-bright lift carries the rest of the bottle. Mezcalero, Cuentacuentos, and the smaller Sola de Vega producers do the legible work.
