Botik Lechuguilla
Chihuahua lechuguilla from Dolores Gonzales Torres – a rare northern release and a category-adjacent project
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Botik
- Maestro: Dolores González Torres
- Region: Yerbaniz Batopilas, Chihuahua
- Agave: Shrevei
- ABV: 46%
- Price: $40–90 ($$)
Verdict
Gonzales Torres's production is disciplined and the bottle is legible as a specialty-maestra release; the regional vocabulary alone justifies the attention. Lechuguilla sits between mezcal and sotol in category terms – Chihuahua as its own conversation, not a footnote to Oaxaca. A legitimate northern release. Consensus 4.0 is close; we score 3.5.
Lechuguilla distillation is its own project, category-adjacent
Tasting notes
Nose: Dry grass walks in first, then pine, warm earth
Palate: Lean and northern at 46%. Lechuguilla (Agave shrevei and related species) is a Chihuahua category cousin of sotol – the plant isn't technically mezcal agave, and the bottle reads category-adjacent rather than category-central
Finish: Cooling, dry, with a slow herbal fade – long
The bottom line
A vocabulary bottle for northern-agave completists
