Verdict
Five consensus reviews at 4.2 aligns. Maria de la Luz works with one of the oldest living still traditions in Mexico, and bottles like this are why the San Luis Potosí side of the category deserves more American shelf space. Compared with Amormata's Durango work, this is comparably regional but aromatically distinct. Compared with a Derrumbes SLP release, more particular. Bring one home.
The north keeps making mezcal the south ignores; we shouldn't
Tasting notes
Nose: Green stone, dry herb, cooked agave, a lick of citrus
Palate: San Luis Potosí mezcal is one of the category's under-followed regions and the campanilla still (an older, small-capacity rig) gives this verde a specific aromatic lift and textural presence
Finish: Herbal, mineral – long
The bottom line
San Luis Potosí earns the shelf space. An excellent non-Oaxaca pickup
