El Tigre Papalote - Tio Genio
Genio García's papalote at 47-52% – another reference El Tigre, and the counterpoint to Don Lázaro's batch
Score: 4.5/5 agaves
- Producer: El Tigre Mezcal
- Maestro: Genio García
- Region: Atempa, Guerrero
- Agave: Papalote
- ABV: 47%
- Price: $150+ ($$$$)
Verdict
García runs drier and more angular than Don Lázaro, both maestros work, neither sounds like the other, and the category education comes from the comparison itself. Buy both if you can; El Tigre's one-palenque thesis is that identified hands produce identifiable bottles, and the García-versus-Lázaro pairing proves the thesis.
Multiple maestros, consistent caliber, distinguishable bottles
Tasting notes
Nose: Wildflower, then warm stone, dry herb
Palate: Aromatic at 47-52%. Comparing García's batch to Don Lázaro's is the whole point of one-palenque bottling, two hands, same agave, legibly different bottles
Finish: Unending. Drying, cooling, with a slow herbal fade
The bottom line
The drier half of a great pairing
