Verdict
Luminar's añejo is the category's proof that aging can make a weak spirit worse rather than better. The tequilana base at 40% couldn't support the wood in the first place, and the añejo treatment delivers exactly the kind of hollowed-out oak-forward pour you'd expect. A 2.0 is the fair reading. Any honest blanco at this price does more for the drinker than this bottle does.
Wood covering a void
Tasting notes
Nose: Oak, then vanilla extract, cooked agave, a caramel top note
Palate: At 40% the tequilana base is already thin, and the añejo treatment flattens it further – the wood is louder than anything underneath, and there's almost nothing underneath worth being louder than
Finish: Wood-warm, hollow. Short
The bottom line
The oak hollowed out what little was there. Aged mezcal is not automatically better mezcal
