Verdict

No Brand is exactly what the label says – unbranded mezcal released under the producer's name, which is the best kind. Dolores González Torres's lechuguilla is a bitter-herbal desert reading that puts Chihuahua on the map for serious drinkers. Six reviewers at 4.2; we agree. Next to a bacanora, this is a northern-state flight worth an evening.

Lechuguilla is Chihuahua's case for a DO of its own

Tasting notes

Nose: Creosote up front. Dry stone, bitter herb, a faint mesquite smoke underneath

Palate: 47.5% shrevei from Yerbaniz Batopilas – the lechuguilla signature of bitter desert herb and mineral dryness, honest and unpolished

Finish: Dry, herbal – long

The bottom line

Buy for the northern-state canon
