Verdict
Revel Avila Blanco is the agave-spirit category at its most marketing-led. The blend of smoked and steamed agaves means the bottle doesn't have to choose between tequila-style and mezcal-style – but refusing to choose isn't neutrality, it's absence. 40% ABV on a premium-positioned agave spirit is a tell. 400 Conejos is what happens when a conglomerate treats mezcal as a line item; Revel is what happens when a celebrity treats it as a brand vehicle.
Bottled for the bar back, not the drinker
Tasting notes
Nose: Neutral agave, faint smoke, a petroleum edge, sweet vanilla
Palate: Thin, the smoked-and-steamed agave blend reading as neither clean like a blanco tequila nor textured like a mezcal joven. 40% is the commercial ABV that tells you the target
Finish: Sweet, hollow
The bottom line
A brand vehicle, not a spirit. The hybrid category has better options; so does every adjacent category
