Sotoleros Lalo and Nando
Chorreras Red Label – master-and-apprentice at the still
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Sotoleros
- Region: Aldama, Chihuahua
- ABV: 47%
- Price: $103 ($$$)
Verdict
Don Eduardo Arrieta and his apprentice Fernando Porras distill together, which makes the Red Label a lineage bottle, not the loudest in the Sotoleros catalog, but one of the more honest demonstrations of how sotol gets taught. Consensus 3.8 is fair. For more conviction, climb to the Bienvenido Fernández or Lupe bottles. But this one documents the category's future.
Two sotoleros, one bottle – the transmission, audible
Tasting notes
Nose: Dry grass, light smoke, mineral
Palate: ~47% carries a balanced, mid-weight profile, the Chorreras terroir legible, the hand of two distillers visible in the cleanness of the cuts
Finish: Medium, dry, flinty
The bottom line
The lineage bottle. Worth having for the story and the liquid
