Reviews / Mezcal from Durango
Mezcal from Durango
Durango is the most coherent non-Oaxacan mezcal region in Mexico. The signature plant is cenizo (Agave durangensis), which runs dry, mineral, and savory in a register Oaxacan agaves cannot match. Durango producers tend toward higher proof, longer rests, and more aggressive cooking – bottles read structural and serious where lower-tier Oaxacan mezcal can read sweet. The conversation is led by Derrumbes, 4 Vientos, Lágrimas de Dolores, and a handful of single-maestro labels. For a Durango introduction, Derrumbes Durango is the canonical entry.
